In episode 18, Lordgenome's memories are recovered by Rossiu's research team, revealing the truth about the Anti-Spirals and the rationale behind forcing mankind to live underground to control its population. It is revealed that Lordgenome was once part of a group that fought against the Anti-Spirals, the Spiral Knights, who defended the galaxy from the Anti-Spiral threat. However, the Spiral Tribe ultimately lost the war, allowing the Anti-Spiral Tribe (The Han-Rasen Tribe) to dominate the universe. Lordgenome's revived head is used to control the massive spaceship Arc-Gurren. Leeron explains that the ship only responds to him, similar to how Lagann only works with Simon. After the Gurren Brigade seized Cathedral Terra, it was relocated there for the same reason.
