Lan's real name is simply C. It is Gingetsu who chooses to call him Lan (Ran). He was referred to as C because he was one of the three remaining clovers from an experiment, with the triplets named A, B, and C. Now, he is the sole survivor and lives away from the Clover Project research facility, causing him to age rapidly. This explains why we see Ran as a child in the flashback of the last volume and as a teenager or young adult in the other volumes, even though only two years have passed since he first met Gingetsu. In fact, his life will end in five years. Despite knowing this, he prefers to stay away from the facility—not just for freedom but mainly to be close to the person most important to him.
Ran's character isn't deeply explored until the final volume, which includes a flashback detailing how he and Gingetsu met and began their relationship. However, Ran differs from Gingetsu: as a child, Ran displays maturity beyond his years, yet he remains innocent, caring, kind, and open about his feelings. He doesn't want anyone to suffer and is always ready to help if needed. He is sweet and kind but not weak. His existence has been challenging, and despite knowing it wouldn't be easy, he chose to seek freedom by running away, risking his life for a chance at a better life.
