Koji Minamoto is a central figure in the Digimon anime series "Digimon Frontier". In this show, a group of selected human children are granted the power to transform into digimon. Koji was chosen to wield the Spirit of Light. Initially, he is portrayed as the group's loner—a child who longed for friends but couldn't maintain any due to frequent school changes. Koji receives Ophanimon's cell phone message while purchasing flowers for his stepmother. Following the instructions in the SMS, he arrives at a subway station where a Trailmon transports him to the Digital World. Koji travels alone until he encounters Tommy and J.P., rescuing them from a swarm of attacking Pagumon. From that point on, Koji occasionally assists the other DigiDestined before eventually joining the group permanently. Despite his involvement, he often keeps his distance, wary of forming close bonds. This stems from his belief that no matter how close people become, something always separates them. He adopts a cold and rude demeanor towards the others initially, but gradually warms up as he grows closer to them. Koji has a strained relationship with his stepmother Satomi, whom he insists is "Not my mom!" Consequently, he distances himself from his father, who frequently tries to encourage better relations between them. Midway through the series, Koji realizes Satomi wasn't trying to replace his real mother but merely wanted to be part of his family. Upon returning to the real world, Koji decides to give her a second chance. In the Digital World, Koji meets his twin brother, Kouichi Kimura, for the first time. Their parents had separated when they were young, with Koji's mother moving out with Kouichi and their grandmother. Koji's father remarried, told Koji his mother had died, and never informed him about his twin brother. Thus, Koji was unaware of having a brother. Ironically, Koji was the last to learn that Kouichi, in the Digital World, was only a spirit with a semi-physical form (in the real world, Kouichi fell down a flight of stairs and went into a coma). Bokomon overheard the conversation between Kouichi and Crusadermon and had to inform the others (Takuya, Zoe, J.P., and Tommy) while Koji and Kouichi were out of earshot. After returning home, Koji accepted his stepmother and went with his brother to finally meet his mother, whom his father had always claimed was dead.
