Fukuda is another key player for Ryonan, known for his formidable offensive skills that rival many top players in the Kanagawa prefecture. Throughout the series, he is often seen executing alley-oops with Sendoh as the passer. However, his defensive abilities are notably weak and can be easily exploited by opponents. Fukuda has a unique rivalry with Hanamichi, which began when Hanamichi was feeling down after losing to Kainan and encountered Fukuda practicing near a basketball court. Having heard about Hanamichi from Sendoh, Fukuda had been eager to play against him, but Hanamichi initially refused.
Their first real encounter occurs during the final match of the Interhigh Tournament, where Fukuda outperforms Sakuragi in the first half, igniting a competitive fire within him with the words, "I won, Sakuragi." Determined not to accept defeat, Hanamichi tightens his defense on Fukuda in the second half. Ryonan's coach, Moichi Taoka, recognized potential in both Fukuda and Sendoh when they joined the team together. However, due to Fukuda's perceived inexperience and thick skin, Taoka frequently criticized him while praising Sendoh, unaware that Fukuda was quite sensitive.
This led to an incident during an exhibition match at Ryonan, where Fukuda released his pent-up frustration towards Taoka, resulting in a suspension from all games until the Interhigh Tournament. Consequently, he did not participate in the practice match against Shohoku and was absent until Ryonan faced Kainan. Perhaps because of the harsh treatment he endured, Fukuda craves respect and praise. He even sheds tears when the crowd cheers him on against Kainan.
