yamanami keisuke

Keisuke Yamanami serves as one of the two vice-commanders of the Shinsengumi. He is a master of the Hokushin-itto-ryuu swordsmanship style. Often referred to as "Sannan" by both Hijikata and Kondou, Yamanami is well-liked and respected among the Shinsengumi members. However, he frequently finds himself in opposition to Hijikata's leadership style. Unlike Hijikata, Yamanami tends to be more compassionate and thoughtful. Yamanami is often seen carrying an abacus with him, which he finds soothing, especially when he is in a state of intense anger. He has a fondness for children, particularly Tetsunosuke, who reciprocates his affection. Tetsu openly declares that he would prefer to be Yamanami's or Kondou's page rather than Hijikata's. Similar to Hijikata, Yamanami strongly opposes Tetsu handling swords, possibly due to his role in the assassination of the former Shinsengumi Commander, Serizawa Kamo. Since this incident, Yamanami has been hesitant to draw his sword, admitting to Tatsunosuke (Tetsu's brother) that "ever since the former commander passed on, bloodshed lost its appeal." Yamanami is in love with Akesato, a courtesan from Shimabara. He maintains their relationship by visiting her at Shimabara as her customer. According to Todo Heisuke, Akesato exclusively waits on Yamanami.
