Johnny Joestar, often referred to as "Joe Kid" or "JoJo," was a prodigy in racing. However, while waiting in line for a play, the girl accompanying him convinced him to cut to the front and bribe the bouncers to eject the youth who had been waiting all night. This led to the youth shooting Johnny, causing him to be paralyzed from the waist down and hospitalized, where he endured physical abuse. Having lost his friends and respect earned as a jockey, no one visited him during his hospital stay. Near the start of the series Steel Ball Run, Johnny met Gyro Zeppeli and regained his ability to stand upon touching Gyro's steel ball. Believing Gyro could teach him to walk again, Johnny joined the Steel Ball Race to receive training from Gyro. Throughout the race, Johnny rode a horse named "Slow Dancer," inspired by the Boz Scaggs song. This old American Appaloosa was initially difficult to tame but eventually became Johnny's means of mobility. Johnny acquires a Stand named "Tusk" during their encounter with Dio and Dr. Ferdinand in the Devil's Palm. Tusk can fire Johnny's spinning fingernails like a revolver, with the nails needing a few seconds to regrow. This long-range attack becomes his primary defense. The Stand is small, adorned with the same star pattern as Johnny's clothing, and resides inside him, offering advice through animal-like sounds without speaking. Later in the series, Johnny masters Gyro's "Spin" technique, combining it with his Stand's fingernail bullets and even using it on himself. His Stand evolves, retaining a similar appearance but gaining the ability to fire from the toenails on Johnny's paralyzed feet.
