Jeremiah Gottwald, also known as Orange, is a significant antagonist-turned-supporting protagonist in the anime series Code Geass. He is an elite Knightmare Frame pilot deeply concerned with maintaining Purist supremacy within Britannian society. Jeremiah is somewhat overconfident and passionate about advancing his goals, traits that often make him rash and impulsive in battle.
He was formerly part of Empress Marianne's guard and was profoundly affected after failing to prevent her assassination. His loyalty towards Marianne and to her children, Lelouch and Nunnally, was so intense that he was willing to betray anyone to prove his dedication to them.
Character Background:
Jeremiah Gottwald initially served as an elite Knightmare Frame pilot and a member of the Purist Faction. He attended the Imperial Colchester Institute before joining the Britannian army, aiming to limit military service to Purists alone. Jeremiah was guarding the Aries Palace when Empress Marianne was assassinated, considering it his greatest failure. Following this event, he transferred to Japan, the land that had taken the lives of Marianne's two children, Lelouch and Nunnally, in an attempt to redeem himself.
Initially holding the rank of Margrave in Area 11's military hierarchy, Jeremiah became Acting-Consul after Clovis's murder. However, his status plummeted following his public defeat by Zero and his subsequent mental instability when denied the chance to regain his former standing. By episode 10, he became obsessed with capturing Zero.
After learning of Lelouch's motive for becoming Zero, Jeremiah regained his sanity and found new purpose in serving Lelouch and Nunnally, atoning for his past failures.
First Season:
Jeremiah first appears in the series when Prince Clovis commands the recovery of a stolen capsule. He engages Kallen Kozuki during this mission and leads the Sutherland unit in Shinjuku Ghetto. Lelouch easily defeats his company and assassinates Prince Clovis. Jeremiah suspects treachery among Clovis's guards due to their memory loss caused by Lelouch's Geass. He has most of them arrested.
During Suzaku's execution, Zero interrupts, announcing himself publicly and declaring he killed Clovis. Lelouch uses his Geass on Jeremiah to force him to assist in Suzaku's rescue, leading to Jeremiah's disgrace when they succeed with his aid.
Following this incident, Jeremiah's standing with both the Army and Britannia severely drops. Reduced to pilot rank, his superiors and fellow pilots mock him as "Orange." Despite this, Villetta Nu remains loyal to him. His peers even attempt to assassinate him, from which he is rescued by Suzaku and Villetta.
Seeking to regain his status, Jeremiah seeks opportunities to capture or kill Zero, even disobeying orders. During the Battle of Narita, his impulsive actions lead to his defeat.
Schneizel's scientists enhance Jeremiah with cybernetic devices, tampering with his mind and rebuilding his emotions. Before the process is complete, he goes insane at the mention of Zero. He escapes the research facility, stealing the Knight Giga Fortress Siegfried. After chasing C.C. and Lelouch to Kamine Island, Jeremiah and the Siegfried are dragged into the ocean by C.C. in a kamikaze attack.
Season Two:
Despite the deep sea pressure crushing C.C., Jeremiah somehow escapes and allies with V.V. His implants are mostly internalized, but his left eye remains noticeably cybernetic. He wears an orange mask with an opaque eyepiece and clothing similar to a Knight of Rounds.
Aware of Lelouch's identity as Zero, Jeremiah asks why Lelouch betrayed the Emperor. Upon realizing Lelouch's true identity and motivations, he regains sanity and swears loyalty to Lelouch to redeem his failure to protect Marianne. He now takes the nickname "Orange" as a compliment.
During the second battle of Tokyo, Jeremiah reunites with Suzaku and fights Gino. After the F.L.E.I.J.A.'s detonation, he restrains an enraged Lelouch as the Black Knights retreat. He searches for Nunnally and encounters Suzaku in the explosion's aftermath.
After the Black Knights betray Zero, Jeremiah rejoins Lelouch after he takes the throne. He helps Lelouch in battles against Schneizel and the Black Knights, encountering Anya Alstreim. He breaks open Mordred by self-destructing his Knightmare but spares Anya's life when she mentions having no memories. Realizing she is under Geass influence, he uses his Geass Canceler to restore her memories. He declares "All hail Lelouch!" when Lelouch becomes world ruler.
During the planned execution of the Black Knights, Jeremiah orders soldiers not to fire and faces off against Suzaku, knowing their plans. When Lelouch is killed, and prisoners freed, Jeremiah orders a retreat.
At the series' end, Jeremiah cultivates an orange farm with Anya in France, smiling contentedly. Ironically, this was the fate Guilford suggested awaited him in the first season, to which he was furious.
Geass Canceler:
In the second season, Jeremiah gains an extraordinary anti-Geass power called Geass Canceler. Situated in his left eye, hidden by his mask, it negates any other Geass within his field of influence. It does not require eye contact and works through physical barriers. It can restore memories erased or modified by Geass. When activated, the silver cover of his left eye opens, revealing an inverted blue sigil over his green cybernetic eye. The Geass Canceler affects only Jeremiah and activates automatically when he is affected by a Geass.
