Itaru originally hails from Tokyo but has an Osaka accent. He dropped out of college, where he was majoring in Literature, and left home to avoid being a burden to his parents. Kouki finds him drunk among a pile of trash and accidentally breaks his camera. With nowhere to stay and no money to cover the repair costs, Itaru is compelled to move in with Kouki.
Itaru is talented in writing. In the past, a friend of his stole an idea for a story he had been working on for years. This friend was popular, and when the story he published won an honorable mention in a literary magazine, no one believed Itaru's claims of plagiarism—citing the disparity in their skills. This experience made Itaru more timid and less confident in himself.
