Ippo Makunouchi is the main protagonist of the series. He lives with his mother, Hiroko Makunouchi, and helps with the family charter boat fishing business. Ippo is a classic power in-boxer known for his Peek-a-Boo style of boxing and hard punches, including three signature moves: a rib-cracking liver blow, Gazelle punch (an uppercut variant), and the Dempsey roll technique. These punches are inspired by Mike Tyson, Floyd Patterson, and Jack Dempsey respectively.
Throughout most of his school life, Ippo was bullied. After being rescued by Takamura, he ends up at Kamogawa Gym, where he displays explosive punching power. Inspired by a video of Mike Tyson, Ippo decides to take up boxing to feel reborn with strength. He quickly proves himself to Takamura and Kamogawa and starts on the path to becoming a pro boxer.
His Pro-Debut Match was against Oda Yusuke, who was seen as lazy and unmotivated until his girlfriend threatened to break up with him, pushing him to train seriously. There was tension between Ippo and Oda due to a misunderstanding. During the fight, Ippo initially had the advantage but was saved from losing due to a cut by his coach. He managed to knock Oda out with a series of jabs, winning the match.
After winning two fights upon his debut, Coach Kamogawa enlisted Ippo in the East Japan Rookie King Tournament, aiming to face Miyata in the final. His first opponent was Jason Ozuma, a polite black officer from America with devastating hooks. Ippo won this intense match by taking advantage of Ozuma's wide swing and delayed punch due to a broken rib.
In the second round, Ippo faced Kobashi Kenta, a points-focused boxer who tried to drain Ippo's stamina through clinching. Despite Kobashi's strategy, Ippo KO'd him in the final round after Kobashi stepped outside his usual cautious approach.
The semi-final round saw Ippo fighting Hayami Ryuuichi, an Inter High Champion known for his fast Shotgun barrage. Initially underestimated, Ippo managed to counter Hayami's short uppercut and finished the fight with an uppercut to win in one round.
In the East Japan Final Round, Ippo faced Mashiba Ryou, who defeated Miyata with a controversial foul. Despite Mashiba's flicker jabs exploiting Ippo's reach, Ippo broke Mashiba's elbow and delivered a heavy KO victory.
With a broken fist, the All Japan Round seemed unlikely, but after meeting Sendou Takeshi, the West Japan Rookie King, Ippo decided to fight. With therapy from Doctor Yamaguchi, Ippo fought with a proper hand and won when Sendou turned out to be unconscious in his corner.
After winning the All Japan Rookie Tournament, Ippo found Miyata going overseas. He rehabilitated his injured hand and supported his fellow boxers at Kamogawa Gym. He then met National Feather Weight Champion Date Eiji, who hinted at a future match. Ippo trained intensively and entered an A-class tournament, defeating Okita Keigo, Saeki Takuma, and Alexander Volg Zangief.
Facing Date Eiji, Ippo initially pushed the champion to his limits but became disoriented by Eiji's Neck Spin technique. The referee stopped the match when Kamogawa threw in the towel, giving the victory to Date Eiji. This loss motivated Ippo to continue training and challenging himself.
Following a five-month break, Ippo fought Ponchai Chuwatana, a Thai fighter. In the second round, Ippo used his new finishing move, the "Dempsey Roll," to finish Ponchai off.
Next, Ippo faced Sendou Takeshi again, now the new featherweight champion. Both fighters prepared intensely, resulting in numerous slug fests. Ippo invented a combo of his three strongest techniques to defeat Sendou and claim the belt.
After obtaining the National Japanese Feather Weight Belt from Sendou, Ippo successfully defended the title eight times.
After another canceled fight with Ichiro Miyata, Ippo considered retiring but found renewed motivation to become stronger. Kamogawa advised him to aim for the World Championship by defeating all OPBF National Champions.
Ippo's first match as a world contender was against Alfredo Gonzales, the 2nd ranked Featherweight in the WBA and 3rd in the WBC. In the 7th round, Ippo lost via TKO after Alfredo landed a powerful right counter.
Total Fights: 26. Wins: 23, all by KO. Losses: 3.
