In Book 1, Mitsuo becomes possessed by the ghost of Kiyomi, a girl who had a crush on Hasunuma and regretted never confessing her feelings. Using Mitsuo's body, Kiyomi tries to express her love to Hasunuma. However, Mitsuo's classmates mistakenly believe that he is the one professing his love to Hasunuma and conclude that he must be gay, a notion Mitsuo vehemently denies. Hasunuma, however, seems to understand the truth and expels the ghost from Mitsuo's body using charm cards. He possesses considerable knowledge about spirits, which proves useful in aiding Mitsuo. Hasunuma is a parody of the seme stereotype found in shounen ai stories. Unknown to Mitsuo for most of the four books, Hasunuma harbors feelings for him and frequently looks out for him. On one occasion, he even jumps out of an upstairs window to save Mitsuo and later crossdresses to protect Mitsuo's reputation. Mitsuo also starts developing feelings for Hasunuma but tries to hide them due to fear, uncertainty, and a fabricated concern for Hasunuma's "feelings." At the end of the series, there is a gag comic that highlights the fact that Hasunuma's full name has never been revealed. When he attempts to tell Mitsuo his full name, his words are censored as if they contained profanity.
