Hachirouta Hoshino is the main character of the series. People usually call him "Hachi" (which means "eight" or "eighth" in Japanese) or "Hachimaki" ([ハチマキ, "Headband"]), due to the headband he wears during his EVAs. His lifelong dream has been to own his own spaceship, but the high cost of purchasing one and his low-paying, seemingly dead-end job make it difficult for him to decide whether to pursue this dream. Hachi's father is a famous engineer, which causes Hachi a lot of mixed feelings. Much of Hachi's motivation can be summed up as "bigger, faster, and further." However, this ambition often leaves him conflicted about his relationship with space. Loud and brash, Hachi struggles to express himself adequately, particularly in romantic situations.
Note that Hachirouta's backstory is portrayed somewhat differently in the anime compared to the manga.
