Hugo Bernhardt shot the girl's armed mother in front of her when he encountered them in a shanty in the Burmese jungle. The mother had a gun aimed at him, so he shot her before she could shoot him. After bringing the girl to live with him at his house, she never laughed again.
She excels at jump rope and using chopsticks. She has a fondness for birds and even attempts to take one in to raise, but Dr. Tenma warns her that the baby bird will die if she does this.
When Tenma prepares a typical Japanese dish for Hugo and the girl, she finally laughs upon seeing Hugo struggle to use chopsticks.
