Genbu Kururugi is Suzaku's late father, the final Prime Minister of Japan, and the host to Lelouch and Nunnally Lamperouge during their exile as political hostages seven years before the series begins. When Britannia initiated its invasion of Japan, Genbu steadfastly refused to surrender, opting for relentless resistance against Britannia. In a heated debate over ceasing the war with Britannia, he was killed by his own son, Suzaku. Following this incident, the truth about Genbu's death was concealed by his associates, later known as the Kyoto Group, and reported as seppuku, a form of noble suicide. In "Suzaku of the Counterattack," Genbu is secretly collaborating with Britannia to undermine Japan's leadership. Suzaku overhears his conversation with the Emperor and is compelled to kill Genbu. In "The Nightmare of Nunnally," Genbu decides to kill both Lelouch and Nunnally, but before he can act, C.C. intervenes and kills him, with Suzaku witnessing the event.
