The protagonist is a powder hunter named Gamma. He has metal plating on his right hand and arm, which allows him to catch bullets. This plating extends to his cheek and neck. Gamma wields a chainsword and has mastered the ancient Eastern art of Karin Zanjutsu (literally, Fire Ring Sword Technique). In its 2,000-year history, only 15 people have mastered this technique. While it typically takes 32 years to master, Gamma accomplished it in just 4 years. Those who achieve mastery are surrounded by a black flame of death, enabling them to perform special attacks with their sword, such as creating fire chains and wings from their body. Gamma is the last heir of the Karin Zanjutsu tradition. He seeks the Zombie Powder for immortality, though his reasons remain unknown. As a powder hunter, there is a bounty of 960,000,000 Niit on his head. He also appears to have some connection to a woman in black, whose name is revealed by Tasha as Tatena. Her grave is located behind the home of Nazna Gemini.
In Tite Kubo's more popular work, Bleach, the character Grimmjow Jeagerjaques bears a strong resemblance to Gamma.
