Before moving to the village, Schumann's life somewhat mirrored what Tenma's future was expected to be before his encounter with Johan. He resided in a major city, ingratiated himself with the hospital director, and even married the director's daughter. Nevertheless, his intense focus on advancing his career caused him to overlook his wife's deteriorating liver condition. Her death made him recognize the true value of human life, prompting him to leave the bustling city and move somewhere remote where he could form personal connections with all his patients.
