Mr. and Mrs. Fortner adopted Johan and Nina after the tragic murder of Mr. and Mrs. Liebert. A few months later, Johan ran away from home, leaving Nina in their care. Despite publishing several articles in the local newspaper about his disappearance, their efforts to find him were unsuccessful.

The Fortners had initially planned to tell Nina the truth about her past when she turned twenty. However, as her birthday approached, they decided against it, choosing instead to let Nina continue believing that she was their biological daughter. On the night of the twins' 20th birthday, Johan orchestrated the murder of Mr. and Mrs. Fortner through Detective Messener and Detective Muller.
