Ayumu Nishizawa is a girl from Hayate's previous school before he became a butler. She has always harbored feelings for Hayate and feels delighted when he visits his old school. Ayumu fiercely defends both herself and Hayate, even resorting to violence against anyone who speaks ill of them, including a teacher who labeled Hayate as a dropout after his parents refunded all his tuition fees the day Hayate was sold.
She confesses her love to Hayate, but he rejects her after having a vision of Nagi. Undeterred, she attempts to talk to Hayate again a week later, only to encounter Nagi. Shocked by the realization that metaphorically, Nagi is a dragon while she is merely a hamster, Ayumu retreats, vowing to bring a stronger 'hamster' next time. Later, she challenges Nagi to a karaoke duel but ends up losing.
In the anime series, it's a recurring joke that Ayumu appears in every episode, usually for less than thirty seconds, engaging in activities unrelated to the main plot, yet always involving food. However, she stands out as the only girl who has openly confessed her love for Hayate, often finding herself in situations where she's alone with him, typically shown eating something.
Hinagiku and Ayumu made a pact—either Ayumu would succeed in making Hayate her boyfriend or Hinagiku would get Hayate to confess his love for her. They promised to support each other throughout.
In season three, Ayumu now resides in Nagi's boarding house as one of the tenants.
