A poet and Gilbert's real father, though he pretends to be Gilbert's uncle. Auguste is an adopted member of the Cocteau household. Having been raped by his elder step-brother during his own youth, Auguste abuses Gilbert—starting with physical and emotional abuse and later progressing to sexual—at a young age. Initially aiming to raise Gilbert as an "obedient pet," he later tries to mold him into a "pure" and "artistic" individual through neglect and manipulation of Gilbert's obsessive love for him. Upon discovering Serge's relationship with Gilbert, he strives to separate the two, refusing to let his "nephew" form a bond with anyone who might genuinely care for him. He only shows genuine concern in his final moments when he realizes that Gilbert has fallen in love with Serge.
