Ash is the central figure in the series. He has a half-brother named Griffin, whom he calls "Griff," sharing the same father. Griffin and Ash are the offspring of their father's first and second wives respectively. At eight years old, Ash ran away from his home in Cape Cod to escape social pressures and was taken under the wing of Papa Dino, the leader of the Corsican Mafia. Since then, Ash has been groomed and trained to eventually take over as the Mafia Head. He was also given leadership of Manhattan's largest street gang to prepare him for this role, which he does not want. A significant portion of the manga revolves around Ash's attempts to evade Papa Dino's plans for him.
At first glance, many characters in the manga describe Ash as "beautiful." He has shaggy platinum blond hair, pale green eyes, and a slender build. However, his personality is far less graceful. Known for his sarcastic attitude, recklessness, and seemingly cold ability to kill, he has earned numerous enemies. On the other hand, his intelligence and charismatic leadership have garnered him many useful connections, which he is always ready to exploit. His special skills include good marksmanship, proficiency in hacking 80s computers, and a sixth sense for being followed. Despite never completing high school, Ash reads extensively and has taught himself advanced math. When he chooses to, he can even come across as quite cultured.
His later character design was inspired by the actor River Phoenix.
