Of course Polignac turned out be more of a lion in sheep's clothing, but she's definitely more interesting and sympathetic than du Barry and Jeanne. The series still struggles in its attempts to create compelling villains, though, and it's clear that most of its strengths stem from Oscar and Andre's side of the story.

And regarding Marie: her opulence and naïveté is frustrating, but Ikeda has done a good job of showing the readers why she is this way. She was 14 years old(?) when she moved to France and had to almost completely cut herself off from her old life in Austria, leaving her without familiarity and a mother figure during a critical time in her development. It makes sense that she would find someone like Polignac alluring.
