Wouldn't removing the Spear be a bad idea? The angel is still penned to the cross, but the Spear is supposed to be what keeps it's power in check. Of course, that dives deeper in the mythology of Evangelion, deeper than the anime or manga ever revealed. The Eva wiki has a lot more interesting information about the Spear.

The omnibus release by Viz has a lot of interesting information about certain aspects of Evangelion such as the Spear of Longinus, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and so on.

The angel is defeated, but not before irreparable damage has been dealt to Asuka's psyche. She is basically a vegetable at this point, as Shinji finds her blankly staring into space in the hospital room. Wasting no time at all, Kaworu has been designated as an Eva pilot.

I personally think that what happened to Asuka is probably one of the worst things that could happen to a person.

I can't but just feel so bad whenever they show Asuka traumatized like that. All she wanted was to act mature enough to get her mom's attention but she fails like that

Some interesting turn of events.

Rei uses the Lance of Longinus to defeat the angel but it's irrecoverable by Nerve now. Asuka almost broken beyond repair and Kaworu acting as her replacement for Unit 02. Also the fact that the 2nd Impact was caused by a collision between Adam and an angel turned out to be false.

Well, this is the part where Evangelion starts to get really convoluted (the anime at least)
