I'll say it right now, the episode that these last few chapters have adapted is one of my favorites and I'll be god damned if this isn't even better. I think one of the reasons is that Sadamoto is spending quite a bit of time on Shinji and Asuka's interactions. I guess he's taking advantage of the manga format and developing their relationship more in depth.
Then again, maybe it's that I'm really enjoying this version of Asuka. She isn't showing her arrogant, rude self to the adults and that adds a new, interesting dynamic to her character. I'm not sure if she doesn't mind showing this side of herself to Shinji she somehow trusts him, or because he knows about her from their first meeting, or she only plays the "good little girl" around adults. But, I like it just the same.
The scene where he tried to talk to her was really good, not rushed like it's anime counterpart and seems that some of Asuka's buttons were most definitely pushed. However, Shinji's relating to her trying to be miss perfect, Which is I think how he tried to be around his aunt and uncle, shows that these two characters do indeed have things in common. Which is good, because it always intrigued me how their anime counterparts had their parallels yet different ways of handling themselves.
Also, as an aside, after Asuka broke the camera I was thinking "that will be took out of her paycheck". But do Eva pilots even get paid?
