Reviving people is bad, why? Because it's counter nature? They can't give a better reason than this? Doctors revives their patients when they have an heart attack, is it bad? They should just let them dying because it's counter nature?
The story doesn't bring us to understand the magician's reasons for doing what do it, nor it try to figure if that boy would be happy in an illusion. This is just a bad villain who is wrong versus a good saviour who is right, there's absolutely no nuance here.
I'm not saying that reviving people with magic is a good thing, but this story is just one sided moralistic with a stereotypical villain and a stereotypical saviour with a predictable outcome when the good always win and they leave happily ever after.
The author should watch Kino no Tabi to see how to bring a real reflection where everything is not black and white and there's absolutely nothing in between.
