The Transmigrator’s Cultivation Chapter 203 Discussion

  • #1
Let's start by saying that I was very excited to start reading this novel when I found out that these were also people working with I Have Medicine, which is great xianxia. I also came here after catching up on the chapters of Record of Hunyuan Cultivation [Rebirth], which is another good work, and I was ready for another good novel of this type.

Additionally, I was interested in the main character himself and his constitution. I wanted to read about this type because most people with a wood constitution deal with medicine. I was curious how it would be carried out, so it's safe to say that I entered here with enthusiasm and interest. How disappointed I was. This is not a good read and let me present my arguments, of course there will be spoilers.

Let's start with translation.

They weren't great from the very beginning, many things were difficult to understand, and the translator who dealt with most of them was... poorly informed. Many errors were present throughout the translation, from sudden changes in someone's gender, inaccurate translation of names (cultivator core -> alchemy???) to my personal worst - translating "cultivator" to "monk" all the time. My heart bled when I saw it, and despite the translator's assurances, most of the errors were never corrected.

In the xianxia world, of course, there are cultivators who are only called "monk", but this is because they follow the path of the Buddha and their sects are guided by the Sutras. I don't think that every cultivator we meet is a member of this sect... It took away from the immersion.

Well, I can't keep picking on the translation itself. Sometimes it was because of the way of writing that it was difficult to understand what was happening, so the translator had a hard time.

The entire first half of the novel is written as if the author didn't know what he was doing. We jumped from one event to another, practically never finishing them. I constantly had the impression that most of the cases weren't closed until the end.

If I were to compare it to I Have Medicine, the story goes like this: I Have Medicine: [arc]----->[arc]------>[arc] and so on, but in this novel we have: [arc-------> (?random meeting?) ------[arc.

I didn't feel like they were done properly and were disconnected. Therefore, I was prepared for a large number of names and characters, after all, it is xianxia, and a long one at that. Here, however, you don't have to worry about them at all, because once a character is introduced, they will have absolutely no influence in the further plot, even if they appears again.

Spoiler

There are many examples such as siblings from the Xu family whom we helped, who showed up a long time later, talked once and that was it, or a friend we met at the same time who had even less to say. I won't even mention the friend from the boat, with whom we unfortunately parted and never showed up again (honestly, was his presence needed at all? Just to show how nice our hero is?)

[collapse]

Additionally, many of the introduced characters and the description of their fights are absolutely unnecessary and can be omitted. The character is introduced only to watch their fight (and not even with someone from the caste of the main characters) and nothing more, such situations are unnecessary. The authors also have a strange way of describing some areas, but I don't know if it's the translation's fault. Either way, in many cases there was a problem in understanding what a given place should look like.

Spoiler

For example, a character fell into a lake, the whirlpool made him find himself in some underground cave, which turned out to be an oasis in its own way, but it also had a sky and creatures living there, and he could freely go out through the whirlpool??? Or a sect that is in the middle of a mountain, but not actually in a mountain? Many places also make no sense, such as when the MC has to get to the lower world, literally go through to another dimension, all you need to do is fly to the edge of the ocean and go through the corridor because it turned out that everything inside is an illusion... If someone he wants to go lower and massacre defenseless people, there is absolutely nothing stopping him, no wonder some demon took advantage of it with such a lack of security, it makes no sense.

Now let's turn to the characters. We also have a few things to talk about here, and I'll start with the biggest problem - the main character.

The only time you can see any hint of personality in him is in the opening chapters of the novel. The further it went, the more bland it became, and as a reader I even felt like he wasn't going anywhere in terms of improving his skills. You could literally feel that the character was completely lost as to what to do and where to go.

What annoyed me the most was the lack of character improvement. MC is initially naive, gentle and tends to avoid trouble until he is betrayed and supposedly "learned to be careful because the world of cultivation is dangerous blah blah blah". Well, it lasted maybe two sentences?

MC returns to his place of residence, momentarily suspecting whether his only friend may also have ulterior motives, but quickly reconsiders, never to go out again after this one event, and when he did, to show that he learned absolutely nothing.

Spoiler

We have a situation where some time ago someone wanted to kill the MC because of his talent in cultivation, but he was protected and could easily rise to a higher level. As soon as he left, he was asked to talk to strangers who had also recently entered this level, and of course he agreed without any suspicion. It's not like he was almost killed because someone envied him, and it's not at all suspicious that immediately after his promotion, someone wants to talk to him, and he not only has no problem, but also happily drinks the thing they offer. And where is this supposed "smart MC"?

Spoiler

Additionally, when MC meets his old friend from a dozen or so years ago (with whom he talked once, maybe twice?), he immediately takes him under his wing, which is completely illogical. They haven't seen each other for years, and he doesn't suspect that his friend may have changed? Why did he still consider him a friend enough to start a conversation after all this time? Zero vigilance, zero thinking like a cultivator. But we don't have to worry because the supposed friend disappears a paragraph later and never appears again.

[collapse]

But it's not just the MC who has a problem.

The author strangely writes many other characters, including:

Spoiler

failing to make me feel sorry for the general who was possessed by a demon and allegedly ab*sed. SPOILER The general r*ped the prince of the kingdom and his friend many times, but he had feelings for him for a long time, so he is also a victim? It was literally said when the prince began to refuse that the demon did not take over the general's body while they had s*x, and only did it when it was necessary to force the prince to do so. So every other time it was the general who was in control? And am I supposed to feel sorry for him? He wasn't entirely innocent, and I'm glad other readers noticed that too. This Arc itself was a bit pointless to me. He didn't bring any thoughts to the MC, but only introduced a new character (the only one left!) and in a rather random way.

[collapse]

In conclusion, I can say that if you are REALLY bored and want to read xianxia, you can read this novel. Personally, I only lasted this long because I was very very very bored, but I don't recommend it if you want to read something valuable. Instead, I recommend reaching for something else. For example, like the two novels I mentioned at the beginning.
