Don't believe people that say this is on the better spectrum of Harry Potter fics.

It is below average at best.

I've regularly trawled through the garbage of Fanfiction. Net for good stories for over a decade and this is very much below par.

Everytime I see a Harry Potter story on this site I perk up.

"Are we finally going to see a proper Xianxia battle against the Wizards!?"

Nope.

Not even close.

Just more disappointment wrapped in used old plot lines.

    • The author makes various little mistakes and assumptions about the canon and creates plot holes.
        • Hagrid knowing Tom is Voldemort from early on.
        • The Founders being able to speak modern English.
        • Sirius being actually seen as a DE by bystanders.
    • The English
        • The grammar is iffy:Incorrect punctuation, awkward sentences, strange syntax, etc
        • The spellings are inconsistent.
        • The lost-in-translation effect of Chinese interjections, descriptions, and swear words losing the connotations in English.Like hearing Voldemort say "f*ck" over and over again.
    • The Writing
        • There are no major themes. The author repurposes the canon and does low-level wish fulfillment with his main character.

          There is no big culmination
        • Abridging - It is fine that the canon stuff everyone knows is shortened, but even the original scenes involving Ivan come off as bare bones. If a person has never read or watched Harry Potter before, the entire castle would be solid slabs of stone and everyone would have blank mannequin faces.
        • Show & Tell - This is definitely a "Tell" kind of story and not in a good way.The author tells us about the Newspaper Ivan starts, he tells us about the existence of articles, he tells us what each character does.
        • Character development - Although the author rehashes all the canonical events, he does build up to something bigger if the other reviewers are correct. However, we don't see that in the small scale at all.

For example, Ron's role is radically shifted to make way for Ivan in the 2nd book.

The author flatly describes Ron's insecurities- Spoiler

He takes Ginny's role in the story and basically endures the mental trauma he faces in the middle of the 7th book as a 12 year old.

          [collapse]

But there are no changes as we go along.

          Everybody is one note.
    • The OC Protagonist
        • He is a reincarnated Chinese person but we learn NOTHING about his real life.He was just a guy.

Aside from having knowledge about the story, his previous life has zero impact on Ivan.

We don't have exposition scenes, we don't have moments of him relapsing into Chinese habits, we don't have discussions about how he feels about his new family vs old.

Nothing about the events or innovations from the 2000s and being stuck dealing with 1990s technology.

He is blank and stale like this story.
        • He automatically knows the suite of spells from the HP books. There are no scenes of him practicing or even being gifted and talented.

          He just knows the spells.
        • He has no quirks or any other idiosyncrasies to his personality.
Overall - This is an epic length piece of bland tasteless bread in the shape of Harry Potter.
Eating all of it will only result in you asking yourself why did you eat all of this crap when you could have eaten anything else.
