This story is honestly a big joke, nothing more about it. Just that the joke isn't funny. I do love clever misunderstandings and things that you can actually wrap your head around as a "somewhat believable misunderstanding". This is pretty much the opposite of that, the author makes a point of going berserk with the "misunderstandings" to the point where it's simply inconceivable rather than understandable on any level. The level of intellect I'd expect from a grasshopper is about ten times more than what I can seemingly expect from the main character of this novel. It's at the point where he/she's not even human anymore. Many people rating this highly go with the starting line "Don't trust the bad reviews! They just don't get it because they're taking it too seriously!". I'd like to go for the opposite. Don't trust the good reviews, this series is really about how low your bar goes. If you're at the level where you'd get a mighty strong laugh at the prospect of someone yelling "poop" at the top of their lungs, then this would be a perfect fit for you. If you're someone who actually knows quality and knows good comedy and what a real misunderstanding comedy is supposed to be, this is not going to be your cup of tea at all. At most you'd enjoy other characters' PoV rather than the MC and you will wish with your entire might that the protagonist would just spontaneously combust and explode instead of wasting resources by living. To me, and most others I'd wager, a misunderstanding comedy is about making the misunderstandings wacky yet believable to some point. Maybe the main character has something specific he's prone to misunderstand, like a particular topic alien to him. Maybe it's kinda s*upid yet at the very least you could see how that COULD happen. Just as with any joke, it's based on belief. Nothing is funny if it's not even believable at any level. If it's an impossibility that the author just forces through because "he can", then it's just not funny. If the previously established world facts or characterisations utterly denies the possiblity of the "misunderstanding" or "joke" happening, it's not funny. If it goes against all that is even slightly reasonable, it's not amusing. Things that are absurd and impossible in one story might be believeable in another, for sure, and we all adapt to the world and setting we're presented with, things I wouldn't laugh at in one series, that might even piss me off, would make me at the brink of tears from laughter in another. At the same notion, someone acting in a way that is not only s*upid but also completely impossible for a human unless he or she is truly brain dead is also not amusing in the least, especially not after the first few times. If he/she was truly THAT much of a moron, he/she wouldn't be able to function daily and would just be a drooly, slobbering mess incapable of human speech, but of course he/she isn't, instead being a fully functional person except for the tendency to lack even basic awareness of the situation or ability to adapt to new notions. But here's the dilemma, if this person isn't utterly mentally disabled, how come he/she can be s*upid to the point of not being worthy of the word "human" anymore? It's impossible to find this funny unless your bar is incredibly low. This is exactly why I claim the opposite of these people saying not to trust bad reviews. Just because they somehow have the bar set so low that even james cameron in south park wouldn't be able to raise it, that doesn't mean other people have to feel the same.In essence, avoid this novel like the plague if you appreciate good comedy, any measure of intelligence and a story that actually requires some skill to be authored. Because that just won't be found here. It's, at its very core, a misunderstanding "comedy" that went too far by not even putting any effort into the misunderstandings nor making them even remotely believable or acceptable. No one came here for a serious story, but many came here for good comedy, being people who appreciate good comedy and gag series filled with absurdity. But this took it too far in the wrong direction and makes "Gag manga biyori" look reasonable and logical. At the very least things fit in properly in that wacky universe, everyone is screwed up.
