First review here in Novelupdates, but if we were to talk about private ones... Hehe.

I have SO. MANY. THOUGHTS. about this novel it’s a bit hard to track where shall my thought should first start off.

Oh my goodness though, I thought that this type would have a bit more reviews or at least, a tad popular, but I suppose that it is truly unorthodox and commonly gives ick (which I do not blame people actually, this requires a certain taste to get along with).

Bear with this long review, oh boy. This novel may be up to your alley.

I have a troubled feeling with the author’s description. They always emphasize the protagonist’s youthful and innocent features. Quite similar to a shoujo’s type of female MCs except, it’s in an eerie manner. Fortunately they had stopped quite some time after the beginning but GOD was that a pain to handle on.

It’s no wonder why it was tagged a ‘Shota’ by one reviewer BUT THIS IS NOT A SHOTA, PLEASE PEOPLE. STOP. YOU GUYS HAD PUT AN ‘EMOTIONALLY WEAK PROTAGONIST’ AND ‘SHOTA’ BUT DIDN’T HAVE ENOUGH BRAINCELLS TO ACTUALLY PUT THE PSYCHOLOGICAL TAG IN THIS LITERALLY ONE!

I get why one puts ‘Shota’ as a tag but I cleaned up the tags for a reason and I’ll explain why with my followed up review.

This is a true epitome of a psychological romance to the highest power, as in. The chemistry is a weird yet interesting way, makes you have butterflies in your stomach yet at the same times, makes you churn in.

The protagonist, Wu Jing, is most often described as innocent, naive and embodies a youthful spirit at the beginning. But this kind of ‘innocence’ is supposed to serve as a contrast to the dark, eerie environment he had transmigrated into.

I believe it is overdone indeed. Now, it is interesting that while the author ceased to describe his ‘overly large eyes’, they had moved towards Wu Jing’s...

Infantilization.

Spoiler

It is so freaking sad and depressing to see how he slowly detoriated under Ning QingHong’s care. His lively spirit is slowly whipped up into this obedient, good Wuwu.

He’s not the playing-to-be-a-fool, vivacious emperor, Wu Jing.

It is hard to say that I do not have the feeling of ‘hating steel for it had not become iron’, it is hard to say I’m not disappointed in Wu Jing.

But honestly, in a play of mental acrobatics... I understand him and why he had turn out that way.

Perhaps, many others who are fiercer than him would have struggled more under the control of the Head Eunuch, Ning QingHong’s care.

But there are also certain citizens who aim for a peaceful life, not wishing to storm out in muddled waters.

And unfortunately, it just so happens that Ning QingHong is a true genius to know how weave a thread of such attitude to be under his control.

And even if Wu Jing had such a spirit, who were to say he would have lived more freely and peacefully? Perhaps, Ning QingHong, that control freak, would have eliminated that obstacle as soon as possible.

It’s. So. Freaking. Sad. To see Wu Jing fall into this quagmire named Ning QingHong. He knows that his options for way out has been eliminated by him yet nonetheless tried to see the bright side of life by seeing him as an ancestor, as a benefactor, as a savior.

Who am I to judge for having him fall into such a plight?

Now, moving on from the heavy part, I’ll give some general overview of the novel and why one must give it at least a try. And why it’s so underrated!

I like the author’s mood displayed in this novel, while they had shown the developing romance between the two protagonists, they never fail to whip us into shape of the actual happenings.

They do not to try to romanticize, but instead persecute... and only persecute.

Without actual consequences. (At least so far here in Chapter 62.)

Now, since the author had focused more on psychological aspects, the well-roundedness of the characters may be deemed as flat, in which I agree.

It focused much more of imbalanced power dynamic of the couple and the consequences of each one as an individual to their environment.

But it sure does stimulates one’s mind and cultivates interest, making one do a deep dive of what they were trying to show.

Spoiler

For example as well, NQH’s bipolar disorder, Wu Jing’s Stockholm Syndrome and infantilization, or their growing unhealthy codependence to each other. Yes, not just Wu Jing’s.

[collapse]

I applaud the author’s depiction of mental illnesses/disorders as they do not really on stereotypes but instead, delved in researching and refrain from using exaggerated commentary or narrative when such illnesses were shown.

For the plot, I’ll leave it out for you to read but it is Heavy. Heavy. And Heavy. It is not for the lighthearted nor for people who only want a ‘yandere possessive seme uwu’.

G.t.f.o. of here.

Sincerely. ❤️
