I Woke Up Piloting the Strongest Starship, so I Became a Space Mercenary Chapter 467 Discussion

Let's just say, if you've read the synopsis, you probably have a rough idea of what you're getting into. This is no philosophical masterpiece, epic work of fantasy, or incredible sci-fi saga.

This is junk food, pure and simple. The kind of sh*t you know your body is gonna punish you for, but you eat anyway just because its so damn delicious.

If I had to describe why I love this novel in one phrase, it's just because it's fun. It strikes a great balance between action and slice-of-life, throwing a plethora of scenarios at you without ever making you feel like the author is reusing content. While the MC is your typical trouble magnet (protagonist), running into massive issues wherever he goes, you get a kick out of how he goes through the five stages of grief regarding the matter, eventually accepting that Murphy is, in fact, out to get him.

The harem is handled AMAZINGLY in my opinion. Basically no drama, just cute fluff. It also never falls into the pit that most harem LNs/WNs seem to fall into: the Harem Member of the Week. (Harem equivalent of the Villain of the Week trope.) The harem members are added in pairs, and the author spends a lot of time to integrate them into the existing group, only adding a new pair every 100 or chapters. If you like drama... You're in the wrong place. This harem is pretty much just cute fluff. The characters aren't incredibly deep, but none of them feel underrepresented, shallow, or get left out; and the group dynamics are great.

The power balancing and fight scenes are amazing. While the MC is insanely strong, he has very clear limitations. Describing his ship in terms of EVE Online, (which is just what I'm most familiar with, although the author may have taken some inspiration) the MC pilots a frigate with the offensive specs of a HAC. Ridiculously difficult to take down in a one-on-one, but far from invincible. The combat isn't limited purely to spaceships though, but I won't go into that. But regardless of the situation, the author does a good job of making the MC feel strong but not omnipotent.

In conclusion, this novel is nothing revolutionary. But what it does, it does damn well, and is a really fun and light read. Though in my mind it gets a lot of bonus points because it's one of the only JP sci-fi/space battle novels I've read that doesn't mostly revolve around mecha.
