In the first few arcs, the MC is pretty lame; I can understand why a lot of people left low marks for it. The story definitely picks up, although some of the arcs are just fluff and the MC letting the ML do whatever he wants. Those can still be pretty good though. Some of them are real good with an involved plot and nice drama, and this is one of the stories I regularly follow for fresh updates. The translation quality is also fantastic. :)
