YOOOO I absolutely loved the background story that was going on that blew up in everyone's faces at the end.

Major spoilers, it's my favorite thing about this book.

Spoiler

Ok, lemme preface this by saying I absolutely despise yanderes. I'm viscerally disgusted by the idea of people restricting and controlling the freedom of other people. It infuriates me.

The brilliant and best part of this otherwise meh story is that it's low-key about the repercussions of a yandere.

Like, it's subtly hinted and referenced mysteriously as the story's backdrop until what happened is fully revealed and explodes in everyone's faces.

I feel like I need another spoiler warning here before I straight up say it.

Spoiler

The yandere here is the emperor. He's the ML's father. The victim is the first empress. She's the ML's mother.

The emperor is psychotic. A true blue yandere who confined the empress and everything. She didn't love him and treated him coldly. But he didn't care about her feelings at all. There are a few hints that the empress sometimes softened toward him that absolutely reads like Stockholm syndrome. (i.e. like a few other yandere stories I've unfortunately come across.) It's great.

The ML is the second prince. Guess who the first prince was? The child the empress had with someone else before she was forced into the palace...

Spoiler

Or so the emperor thought! And so, he had no love for the first prince. But in reality, when the empress was engaged to be married to her sweetheart, the bastard emperor drunkenly snuck into her boudoir and r*ped her. She ran away to elope with the sweetheart, but she got pregnant that night!! Then the emperor tracked her down and threatened the lover and her family's life unless she became his wife. So actually the first prince was her and emperor's blood child. Yo, this mutherf*cker is dumb af. This is why yanderes are intolerable. Lmao.

And where is that first prince now? Yo, he's been dead before the 2nd prince was even born.

When the empress was told the emperor had her son killed, it was the final straw. Of course she never had any faith in the emperor. After years of depression, she killed herself to escape the emperor. And that. Left a lot of landmines behind. Whew.

I ABSOLUTELY love this storyline. It's vindictive and satisfying to see a yandere get his comeuppance.

The ML shows hint of inheriting some of that mania, but he's fortunate enough that MC reciprocates his love. So he never falls over the edge. Thankfully.

Otherwise the story's a typical transmigrated foodie winning over the hearts of everyone through their stomachs with cooking. If you like reading food descriptions etc. this is for you.

It's competently written, even if I'm not a fan of the overly naive MC. She's cheerful enough I'll tolerate it with minimal skipping.

The ML is attractive and his constant self restraint when he's h**ny for MC is hilarious and kind of hot. He's a white lotus so I really felt bad for him since he has to pretend not to act like the wolf he is all the time. 😂

Spoiler

I'm glad when both sides finally come a little clean about who they really are.

TL;DR An average, decent Transmigration novel with that one thing that makes it fascinating enough to keep reading.
