Roughly 4.5/5 stars for me! I don’t think the 3.9 rating on NU does it enough justice! It’s not the greatest cultivation novel but it’s definitely quite enjoyable if you’re looking for something not too serious or detrimental to your mentality. (Though, I am not done with the novel so I can’t determine for sure if it’s going to become serious afterwards).

You would enjoy this novel if you love:

  • Enemies to lovers!!
  • Cold on the outside, but relatively doting and softie on the inside ML
  • Cute, adorable MC that deserves to be protected but definitely has his own perks and becomes stronger as the story progresses and keeps a great attitude about it
  • DOTING, DOTING, DOTING! - from ML, their sect, their families, etc. So many nosy members in the sect but they’re genuine kind-hearted and open-minded people and I think it’s quite cute
  • Differences between the MC and ML (relating to fate) and how they bond over time
  • Plot mystery - what’s the relationship between the Chu family and outside forces, and why was the ML and MC in their contract to begin with?
  • The Legendary Master’s Wife - it has many similar aspects to LMW, and I think that’s one of the reasons why I enjoyed this novel more than others.
Some things that seem to make it a bit complicated for others (mild spoilers) :

  • The MC has very good fortune, therefore he’s almost bound to never come across anything horrible, which contrasts the ML’s horrible fortune
  • The original protagonist of the novel becomes more of a background character that plays a more prominent role against the MC and ML - it’s unlike most novels where the MC is helping or trying to follow the plot of the novel to ‘help’ the original protagonist
  • MC relies on the ML quite a lot in the story, but one should keep in mind that the ML is the only one he trusts in this world, therefore the built-on trust buds into romance as well for both parties
  • MC isn’t the smartest, is relatively weak because of his weak and sickly body, but that all plays into the plot and his attractiveness to other characters in the novel - but although he isn’t the smartest, he’s more of a cute character that gets doted on, making people want to protect or spoil him!
Some things that I find interesting that may hook others (mild spoilers) :

  • The mystery of the Chu family’s original lineage, and the relationship of WHY must it be the MC and ML for this contract
  • The original protagonist is actually... not a white lotus?! Or is he? Is he really what the readers of the MC’s original world know him to be?
  • Why did people collude with the demons to control the MC? What exactly is the motive; is it really just power and blood purity?
  • Why does the ML’s whole essence seem so otherworldly compared to the original protagonist? Why does it seem like the world chose the wrong protagonist to focus on, when the ML is so OP and could crush the original protagonist as if he were an ant?
  • Why does the MC have such great fortune and what is his role compared to the original novel’s Chu Changsheng?
  • How does the MC and ML’s development change the course of the story to deviate from the original plot of the original protagonist’s POV, unlocking plot holes and plot points that are proven to be important to the plot?
