The characters are fairly interesting and there seems a pretty high risk of death for most of them too. At least as of so far though, the very high arbitrariness in the forces arrayed against them (including not just monsters, but also hostile NPCs and political enemies) makes a lot of it unsatisfying for me. When they triumph it feels less like overcoming adversity and more like, well, of course they did, it's a story. And when they fail, it feels unfair and through little to no fault of their own.The promise of the game in the beginning is that there will be lots of death and it will be tense through to the end, so I don't think the characters will get much of a respite at all or feel like they can manage what's coming without having to risk the loss of friends.I do think it will improve as more of the reasoning behind the conceit is revealed so I am going to continue reading and hold off on giving it a star rating, but I worry this may be a story of author-forced tragedy that I will ultimately regret the time I spent reading it.
