Now despite the low reviews I feel this novel is on a very high level of quality. So I'll start with the biggest elephant in the room that is the beginning few chapters. Now as people have pointed out in the reviews the story begins to seem like it will be one big ol revenge story however that is false. This won't be your typical guy gets betrayed spends the entire time toturing and hunting down those who betrayed him story like Nidome No Yuusha. However revenge is still a factor in this story just not the main focus Van (the MC I'll Refer to him as this from now on in the review) still desires revenge for the things that have happened to him and his loved ones. And he does get his revenge on people throughout the story I will not be going into details on it for spoilers sake nor where they take place story wise. However another major factor to this story is the world building and the characters. There is ALOT of world building in death mage we get more info of the world at the end of each chapter and there are even appendixes and chapters set up to just expand the world further however there is still a sizeable amount written naturally in the story. Rather than simply follow someone through a world that all we know about it is how mystical and gorgeous it is. We get to see and understand how the people living in the world view it even how the gods of the world view it's development and the life within it. And that segments us into another section the characters now I won't say that there aren't cliches amongst characters however for the most part a cliche will never make up the entirety of a character unless they're a very minor character with little importance most major characters and side characters you get to understand throughout the story and get to understand even further through the side chapters and extra chapters which go through their perspectives and lives as we get to know them more. One other important thing I hadn't even gotten into yet was the translation. Yoshi's translation alongside the editors for this series make this such a blast to read and they thoroughly understand how to get the feel of the story across. The overall quality of the translation actually beats a few professional translations I've read before and has since raised my standards of translations on this website a bit above what I should probably have. Now there can be a few very minor errors but I never tended to mind or even really find them while reading. So my main thought this novel is amazing and in my opinion has around the same quality as kumo desu ga Nani ka and overlord. So as for my rating couldn't be anything but 5/5
