Legend Chapter 2000 Discussion

  • #1
This review is long and contains vague spoilers.

I wanted to read something lengthy yet flavourful, and after reading all available manga chapters I gave it a try and in a span of several weeks I reached chapter 1700 out of ~4000.

My criterias were: fantasy, adventure, action, length and preferably romance.

First 500 chapters delivered all these things, but with time it begun degrade.

Let's summarize each point:

    • Spoiler
        • Fantasy - it's Fantasy world, all right, has its rules, its creatures and overall it has a decent world building. But many, many arcs and frequently arcs in-a-row centered on human problems: politics, criminals, etc. More so, even "Fantasy arcs" frequently devolve or include a decent amount of these things, and since the main cast isn't really interested in these topics - arcs all feel same-y. Big plus is absence of "game mechanics" such as classes, passive skills, achievements, etc. It has "skills" but they're active and only for the MCs. There is no such things as skills: "Blacksmith", "Swordsman", "Earth Magic" that somehow makes you proficient just because.
        • Adventure - mostly the same as the previous point. ~90% of the novel based around towns and actions in it. New country? Deal with politics. Labyrinth City? Main story is about power struggle. Adventure and explorations are few and lackluster. Nothing wrong with politics, crime etc, but the MC hates dealing with nobles and politics - and it's stated every few dozens of chapters, therefore both of us: the MC and the reader - are bored.
        • Action - character/s is/are too strong to have any meaningful battles, but not too strong enough to make it entertaining. Battles with insignificant monsters can take several chapters and in the end you I ended up skipping most of them, as the outcome is certain and the consequences are insignificant. Two put it simply: up to chapter 2000 - the MC was in danger twice and it wasn't serious at all.
        • Length - I wanted something lengthy and it's lengthy indeed. Too bad there's so much unnecessary information and repeatings. So, goddamn, much. Insignificant battles (as mentioned previously), frequent bio recaps, repeating descriptions, etc, etc. Without exaggerations: these 1700 chapters contain like a hundred paragraphs describing Vihera's clothes in almost exact same words. The same clothes, with the same words for a hundred times.
        • Romance - google "turkish lira to dollar" and check max-time graph. That's the graph for romance/harem here. At first it was decent: motivated, strong and decently written FL that made a first step with MC responding. Sounds good? Well, fast forward 1700 chapters and now we have 3 FL, all are decently written, no problems here, but the one and only time the MC decided to kiss someone was around chapter ~530. That's it. Outside of this sole case he didn't do anything. Talk about the characters past? No-no. Date that actually leads to something? Dates here are all initiated by FLs and serve as a segway to another political story or something. Sex? Sir, this is Christian novel! Marriage? Lol. The receptionist that had feelings for the MC since the first chapters? Blueballed entirely - sorry, lass, you're a comedic relief.

Well, here we are and you might wonder "how is it still 4/5?". It's simple: most of these things are entirely skippable.

The only people who will read this novel are people who want something lengthy, and with time you learn to skip almost entirety of the nonsense.

To conclude this review I want to describe some other points:

        • MC is forceful, he's always in control, yet, 95% of the plot is completing requests of other characters. He doesn't want to explore, to grow stronger, to learn - all of these things happen during others' requests. He's not getting "dragged around" like some other characters, he always receives profit and can always refuse, but it really damages his already shallow personality.
        • Power progression is scarce and uneven - same with the guild ranks. The novel starts with introduction of the power increase mechanisms, yet it can go for arcs without any sensible development in this department. He reached rank B around chapter 360. He will reach rank A around chapter 2500. As of chapter 1500 - the last impactful powerup was around chapter 700.
        • Usage of s*xual violence while infrequent (outside of one arc), is utterly unneeded and grating in the novel that doesn't even mention or imply normal s*x in any way. R*pe here is not portrayed as something cool, casual or good, thankfully (unlike some other novels). Yet, this novel can improve its world building and story in so many ways, that this feels entirely out of place - like sort of a WW2 landmine in some modern Germany park.
        • Translation is decent if not good - yet it covers only 700 chapters as of now. MTL, on the other hand is more than fine. Basic google translate is pretty good. Outside of ever-changing pronounces and occasional badly translated proverb - everything is fine. In 1000 MTLed chapters I had to resort to GPT4 translation just a few times.
        • Usual misogyny-ish things are mostly absent FLs and other women, as mentioned before, are decently written and have their own personalities. The FLs are strong, reliable and have their own things going on outside for the most part. Unlike frequent Japanese tendencies of having two types of women: extra old short grandma and smoking hot 20-ish girl - this novel has plenty of people with different age categories and physiques. There are other couples outside of the MC gang.
