This is pure adventure, after every arc Ian leaves behind a story I can easily imagine reading in a saga or legend. The story doesn’t have bulky descriptions used for world building but it’s still very immersive.

I must say the most interesting thing is the magic system. In usual fantasy novels, magic is some wizard mumbling to themselves. It’s tactical and we judge the wizard’s skill based on how strong their attack is but here, a skilled wizard is a good communicator. The wizards don’t shoot magic out of their hands, instead they support knights and fighters as physical people kill each other. It’s hard to control the power of nature because mysteries have their own will and they can’t be controlled like one’s limb, they have to be reasoned with each time.

As for romance it’s in the background and it’s very quiet compared to most novels. You can just forget about the harem and romance, MC isn’t very interesting in anything other than pursuing mysteries except the occasionally charity.
