I Became the Academy’s Pink Airhead Chapter 18 Discussion

  • #1
TL;DR : The story is a classic possession tale where a gacha game fan ends up in the body of Clara, a weak gag character from the game Yggdrasil Gate. The setting, Academy City, and characters bear a striking resemblance to those from Blue Archive, particularly Kivotos and characters like Takanashi Hoshino. The protagonist, Clara, is a pink-haired airhead who hides her immense power while causing trouble in mischievous ways. The story, with its engaging interactions and strong world-building, is clearly inspired by Blue Archive. While the translation quality is average, the story's potential and release schedule make it worth following.

Before we dive into the review, let's talk about the story's summary. It's your classic possession tale: a die-hard player of the gacha game Yggdrasil Gate gets possessed into the body of Clara, the game's weak and main gag character, and gets to enjoy the world of Yggdrasil Gate firsthand.

Although it's primarily a battle story with ability users, it also has strong high-teen elements. It really shines in showcasing the youth story of girls living in Academy City. Clara's ability to hide her powers and act like the original, foolish senior Clara, causing headache for everyone around her (in mischievous ways), is depicted brilliantly.

Now, let's discuss the setting. The story takes place in Academy City, home to various all-girls schools and academies, all managed by the student council. If this sounds familiar, it's because the setting closely resembles Kivotos from Blue Archive. This similarity extends beyond just the setting.

Next, let's focus on the protagonist, Clara. She's a pink-haired airhead who seems very incompetent. She's the only student at Central Prism Academy (before Arc 1 starts) but is probably the strongest person in the entire Academy City. Clara has a pretty impactful backstory and is merely following the story's plot. She's always joking around and uses her pretty-filter to be as annoying and chatty as possible. Her monologues even reference the Three Kingdoms, which is a nice touch. Clara resembles Takanashi Hoshino, but with a noisier personality. There are other side characters that resemble members of the Abydos Foreclosure Task Force, also I noticed some schools/academy that resembles Gehenna and Millenium, but let's not get into Blue Archive comparisons now.

Alright, I admit it, I'm a Blue Archive fan, but let's get to the actual review. There are barely 20 chapters out so far, but here are my thoughts. Despite having some slice-of-life vibes, the story isn't boring at all. The interactions between Clara and her juniors are genuinely engaging. There are also delinquents serving as mobs, there is also a villain organization called [Ratatosk] serving as an antagonistic organization, and you can't convince me this isn't inspired by Blue Archive, the resemblance is too obvious.

The current arc, which is the first, resembles Vol. 1 of The Foreclosure Task Force, except that Sensei isn't around (I'm not talking about the dark timeline). There's quite a bit of scheming and conspiracies happening in the background, along with some political intrigue. The world-building and storytelling are very strong, and the execution of the story is excellent. It has a lot of potential and I'm excited to see where it goes.

As for the translation quality, it's so-so. There are some grammatical errors, but they're not a huge problem. Sometimes, things are a bit hard to understand, even for someone used to MTL. While the translation isn't perfect, the release schedule is good, so I can't complain too much.

Also here's the Power Ranking System shown in the story, the main characters, and list of schools and organizations that has been shown so far:
