the 'villain' of the arc not being a one-dimensional bad guy. At first it seems like the mistress is one of those typical snakey, manipulative evil stepmoms you see in dramas that infiltrate the family to gain power and unfairly oppress the MC in favour of the stepsiblings. However, the further you read the more you realise that the stepmom is not necessarily evil, but rather willing to get her hands dirty for the good of the family - as shown by her assassination of the other family head when she found out he was plotting to start a baseless war due to his own pride and unleash a dangerous monster that had previously destroyed mountains and killed thousands of people.
she may not have been a good person, but in her attempts to kill the MC she was actually trying to act in the best interests of literally everyone around them because the mc's original body was also such a traitorous shitheel that allowing him to have that much power would've probably ruined the family and their nation. He stole from the family and squandered their assets through illegal under the table deals, he drank all day, he regularly physically and/or verbally ab*sed his staff, he was an as*hole to everyone he met and he tried to corrupt his 10 year old sister with s*xual material so that she'd be easier to sell of in the future because he believed that a disabled woman is a burden only useful for marrying off. As well as this, the MC occasionally alludes to the fact that the original body was a scumbag who might've been planning something even worse than what we'd already seen.
In fact, the "festival" was actually planned in cahoots with the father to see if the MC would survive long enough to grow as a person, and all the staff joined in not out of loyalty to the mistress but hatred for the cruelty they'd been previously subjected to by him. A literally child tries to push him off a cliff after he banned her from leaving to see her family when her mum was on her deathbed
