I actually honestly wonder why it is rated so high and had so many readers on Qidian. After going through the whole 62 chapters of it, I really do agree that everything feels quite lacking, and in my opinion it’s not just because of “bad translation” because I read this in the original language and it was still pretty bad.The characters are not likeable. The MC is so passive that I think he is barely there; in fact I think he isn’t even in half of the scenes. Even with the female lead, it feels like he barely does any contribution in their relationships except just giving everything he earns to the female lead. His justification for doing so is quite weak at times. Their relationships are also quite uninteresting, and like the other reviewers said, I don’t know why they like or dislike each other at all. Rather than saying one hates each other and suddenly like the other, I feel more like that it matters so little that they just feel like pass-byes to each other. Their conversations are rigid, even in the original language. The battles are not exciting, because there is neither tactics nor skills involved, it just feels like the author flashes the next big name and that is it. The System that the MC is using is not exciting, he logs in, gets prizes, and then what? It doesn’t feel like there is any tactical planning behind his use of his systems. Rather than saying the MC is going with the flow, it feels like story just pushes out whatever it feels like and there’s nothing behind it.The “Big Survival Battle” that has been teased since the early chapters was so lacklustre. Honestly seeing how that one would go was the only reason I read so far, but the MC barely did anything in it, not that he would be able to do much because none of his actions so far for preparing for this battle made much progress either. The only thing that seems a bit interesting is the worldbuilding, with its prison system, cultural values, its extreme control on freedom and whatnot. It’s worth exploring more in the future, but I’ve come to a point that it’s hard to continue this story with only expectations but being disappointed each time. But take my words with a a grain of salt, after all, based on numbers alone it seemed like a popular enough novel.
