I gave this a 5 star because the work needs more attention, but it's more a 4-star for me.

The pros:

  • The translation is very good and the translator deserves a 5-star!
  • The genre focuses on action like "Turning" does. Although romance does play a role, it's pretty slow burn (it's a little to fast for me tbh) and does not take over the story. The plot is very well thought out on a macro scale and the world is very fleshed out. I can't wait to see more of it.
  • The power balance between this power couple is actually equal unlike other "power couples."
  • The characters are very well characterized and the supporting characters don't feel like a backdrop.
Criticism:

  • Like I said, Bermuda is a 4-star to me. The plot is very well thought out and intriguing enough for you to wonder what the author has to explore. BUT I think the pacing is off in a verrrrrry minor way. It's not a problem enough for me to DNF at all; it's just that I think the romance kind of happens too quickly.
  • Leonardo's character is really consistent until he's around Hugo. Maybe I just mischaracterized him in my head, but it's a little frustrating to see him hesitate and soften his words/actions in the span of time they're given. Like I don't think their relationship have grown to the point of being in a confusing state yet? It seems a bit rushed.
  • Leonardo is an experienced former Captain of the 11th Squad of the Armsilver and the Empire's Hero who has experienced a lot of devastation at war, but sometimes it feel like he's inexperienced. I just think that sometimes I get confused on what is his personality and what gets sacrificed in order to create opportunities for relationship development.
  • Hugo consistently underestimates Leo. As frustrated as I am when it happens, I think it's good for the story and character arc. I just don't like how there's no friction because of it. Leo just tries to understand him and it blows over. Hugo is a really good guy and also tries to understand Leo, but I'm just a bit sour because there's no real repercussion for him.
  • I feel like they all talk too much when there's an imminent situation on their hands. Sometimes it feel like a sports anime with them speaking so much. Like it's a life-or-death situation and yet the Council still has time to hash out differing opinions with explosions happening in the background. Atp, even though the Imperial Army did Leo wrong and they haven't appeared yet, I've started to feel like they might be more competent. But this is just a minor criticism. The Council seems to handle more of the general population safety/small scale operations instead of a whole national war so I get it but still... Do you know you have thirty minutes?
Extra Opinions:

  • The Spoiler

    Elder Millie Peninsula Arc

[collapse] chapters and if this is what we're starting with, I'm worried about what's going to follow next. Like the difficulty was through the roof, what do you mean there's more 😭
  • I don't know what happens next but Leo doesn't find a way to immigrate to another country and escape the Empire's clutches, I don't know what I'm going to do. I'll be disappointed if he joins the Council tbh unless it's to exploit it. He's gone through so much and figureheads without real power will continue to try to shackle him. I need him to be in a situation where the Empire can't have him at their beck and call and suffer for it.
In Conclusion:

Even I go waaaaay in depth of my criticisms of Bermuda, it's still a really good piece of work. It's hard to pace given the nature of serialization, but the major pieces of the plot are well structured. I really like all the characters individually. It captures the complexity of people (Battalion Commanders) who are put in places of power. Interpersonal relationship development pacing is a bit off, but it's good for the people who don't like miscommunication ig. Plot is so good that I'll have to return to read once more chapters are out. I really like this novel so I have high expectations for it.
