As others have said, the first and second volumes of the novel could very well be two separate series. The first volume has lots of "plot" that's executed fairly well (warning: often very r*pey and sadistic), but skips right over important parts of the actual plot and worldbuilding. The second volume has far less "plot" and it sidelines most of the established girls in favor of fleshing out the worldbuilding and engaging with political intrigue.Personally I like that the author is taking the time to work on the plot in the second volume, because I found the first volume very frustrating in that regard (it would literally establish a threat, then skip right past the actual confrontation). I think my rating could gain or lose a star depending on if the author manages to find the right balance between the plot and "plot", and I think they'll get there after they finish balancing the scales with the second volume.
