The characters are very one-dimensional. Given that I'm one third of the way in the novel, I don't really have that much hope for deep characterization, but maybe we'll get some growth in the future. Spoiler
The only character with some depth for now is the female love rival, Yulika Brande.
[collapse]The story so far is mostly cute interactions, slow romance, and some politics, the action scenes are very brief and it feels like they are mostly there just so that the author could have a "strong female protagonist that's skilled in swormanship". The plot and worldbuilding are fairly cliché with nothing special, it's neither good nor bad.3/5 good enough if you're looking for a decent story with a female protagonist, and don't mind that it's a bit bland. I don't have anything too negative to say, but also nothing too positive.
