Lost His Memory, The Former Champion Became A Star Chapter Completed Discussion

  • #1
I have such mixed feelings for this story it's almost astounding. So in case the summary isn't clear: JZY lost his memory, and he and CS used to date but broke up. CS, not knowing that JZY lost his memory, thought JZY was still interested and wanted to get back together with him after he (CS) had broken up with him (JZY). Later he found out about the memory loss but decided to take advantage and get back together with JZY again. Cue drama as JZY doesn't know why they broke up in the first place and also some background family drama.

So let me start with the good. It honestly wasn't a bad read at all, the characters were interesting and it had their own charm. The chemistry between the main pair was really quite nice. The mystery of the first break up was really tantalizing and it was also fun to see the miscommunications happening to a degree. Depending on the person, the fact that this isn't a dog blood wife chasing crematorium story could also be a plus in your eyes. There's really not that much angst in this story, it's very bottom heavy (as in all the drama happens at the end).

So what's my deal? Well, let's start with the scene of conflict in the summary. Y know, the moment where JZY finally gets all his memories back and finally confronts CS for withholding very vital info about their past relationship? That quite literally gets wrapped up and glossed over in one scene. That's right, literally about 70 chapters of build up and it's literally breezed over in a scene, and then they go on an amusement park date. The second part is big spoilers for the story so be warned:

Spoiler

The family drama is that CS's dad and JZY's uncle used to date, and it's CS's father who caused the entire tragedy of JZY's childhood (caused uncle lost his voice and because of that he spent JZY's entire childhood abusing and beating the sh*t out of JZY). Don't get me wrong, I don't need JZY to hate CS for his dad's actions or for CS to grovel for something he literally didn't have any actual hand in, but you wanna know how long the resolution was for this event?

About three sentences.

JZY doesn't even say "oh damn", he just spouts some lines about how it was the catalyst for them meeting which is true, but finding out the reason his uncle turned abusive was because of his boyfriend's dad is so glossed over it's not even a paragraph. Later, JZY even says some bullsh*t about him not blaming his uncle for beating him anymore, and they eventually meet again and have this really neat and calm discussion that finishes it off with directly treading on my pet peeve of characters having an "ab*sed child" background that has no real repercussions resulting in nothing more but dramatic effect.

Overall, I don't actually dislike this story despite how negative my review is. I genuinely like Cen Si and JZY, and was super interested in seeing how JZY would react when he finally got his memories back. The problem for me is that rather than focusing on the romance between the main pair, I was more interested in both the conflict and the climax of the misunderstanding and seeing how CS would overcome and chase JZY after wronging him. The result? After 69 chapters of build up I had a paragraph. My first thought after reading that chapter was quite literally "I wish jjwxc had a refund system". I didn't need nor want 100 chapters of CS groveling at JZY, but surely more than one paragraph isn't asking to much?! It seemed like every single point of possible contention or conflict was smoothed over so quickly and calmly that it only irked me. Would I reread this? No way, but there were parts that I genuinely liked and the story had a lot of potential. Alas, this story just wasn't to my taste, but it could be to yours so don't let my negatives deter you from giving it a shot.
