- I like MC. Although he is a weak protagonist and his submissiveness is annoying at times, he is genuinely a kind person and self-reliant. I see a bit of myself in him, which makes me want to root for him. That also makes the pain he goes through hit harder for us readers TT

I like that there are no attempts at redemption for the MC's ab*sers. MC doesn't reconcile w/ his abusive husband and the author doesn't try to paint him as the victim. We do get a backstory on why the scum husband married MC, but it doesn't make him guilt-free of his actions. It's okay to sympathize with him, but it doesn't excuse the torment he puts MC through.

There's a conflict in the story where MC gets laid off from his job because his co-worker framed MC for intentionally trying to get him fired. MC's a pushover so he doesn't speak up. I understand that MC has been ab*sed and conditioned to be subservient all his life, that isn't my criticism. My criticism is that instead of using this conflict as a way for MC to get character development and stick up for himself, the author uses it as a romantic plot device for the ML to help out MC. When the ML finds out about the injustice towards MC, he pulls the strings to get the company to apologize to MC and the co-worker that implicated MC magically decides to resign and apologize. Practically a dues ex machina! It's such a missed opportunity for the MC's character development and a poor way to develop MC and ML's romance. I know it's a romance novel, but there comes a point where you get annoyed with the MC's passiveness and want to see him lash out or at least speak up. Having ML doing it for him makes the conflict anti-climactic and unsatisfying...
[collapse] - The explicit scenes... were they really necessary? Most of them felt like the author could've just summarized it into one sentence.
- The story is so melodramatic that I sometimes feel heartless for laughing at certain scenes. Spoiler
After the ML starts distancing himself from MC, MC loses his job, gets his wallet stolen, and then has to dig through the dumpster to find said wallet. The final straw that had me cackling was when it started raining while MC was searching through the tr*sh. I could just hear the violin playing in the background and picture the author beating MC with a bat screaming, " FEEL BAD FOR HIM! FEEL BAD FOR HIM!" Definitely a shitty situation but it's hard to take it seriously when it's obvious the author is trying to jerk tears from readers.
