Disclaimer: I'm the active translator as the time of writing this review, so I might be more predisposed to liking it than most—which is why I don't usually leave a review for my TL projects. That being said, this novel really surprised me! If you're like me, a fan of otome games and dating sims in general, you're going to love this novel.Transmigration novels usually paint the "original" heroine as the antagonist or romantic rival to our FL, so it's really refreshing when a female MC is transmigrated and she isn't immediately pitted against another woman to fight over men. Spoiler
Mina, the original dating sim MC, is just doing her thing while our pigeon MC looks at her with nothing but fondness from the time when she played as Mina herself.
[collapse]With a lot of comedy k-novels, you usually have to know a bit about Korean culture to appreciate the jokes, but for ITAMBMB, the humor comes from the protagonist's video game savvy and the inherently ridiculous characters and scenarios these kinds of games confront you with. There are jokes about bad dialogue options, game-breaking items, and poking fun at the overly serious MLs from time to time.Speaking of the characters, a lot of them are funny without being over the top or grating. They're quirky, but in a way that everyday people are eccentric. All while still being in line with their respective "dating sim" archetypes.Of course, it's not all just fun and jokes. There is an underlying mystery that ties the story together that will keep you wanting to know more.So far, it's been a bit light on the romance. The ML and FL are both compelling and competent in their own right, but there's admittedly not much chemistry between them as of the time of me writing this review. Although, following dating sim conventions, the FL seems to have other love interests waiting in the wings. And her perspective on how differently they treat her when she's a side character compared to when she was the player character is a very interesting concept.TL;DR: This novel really feels like a love letter to ridiculous dating sim games. A little light on the romance compared to a lot of rofans, but heavy on the fun and humor. Read this if you want a relatable FL who uses her genre savvy to navigate her way through sticky situations and an ML who's cold, aloof, and powerful but also kind of a huge nerd and weirdo.
