Tan Hua Chapter 49 Discussion

I got to chapter 49 before I DNF'd this book, and I truly wished that I had stopped earlier. I do not understand what the author was going for when they were writing this. I do not believe that even those who enjoy toxic romances will particularly enjoy this one. There are some things that are unforgivable, and some things that can never be taken back. This book is not a romance, I would not call it a love story, it is a tragedy, even should the MC and ML get together in the end it will still be a tragedy.

Spoiler

until the Chapter I had DNF'd it, the ML has repeatedly injured and humiliated the MC, in a steadily increasing manner, culminating in the ML ordering the MC to be arrested, imprisoned and tortured, with the knowledge that his family and household staff were arrested, imprisoned and set to be executed. While the family was rescued via dues ex machina, the MC has been permanently scarred, branded, blinded, crippled and is dying.

Despite all of this, instead of showing true remorse and regret, the ML instead acts like a petulant child, acting as though he just needs to do a few superficial actions and all will be forgiven, that he will not have to suffer any consequences for his actions. While those around him brush what has been done under the rug, and referring to it as the ML merely 'breaking the MC's heart' instead of the sadism that it truly was.
