As of chapter 975 out of 5707... so I have mixed feelings. I like the story. I am excited to see the development of the main character's career, revenge, and romance. The pacing is a real slow burn however. This is a novel where the filler are rainbow farts, rainbow farts for days! Either the male lead or the country is being complimented. The cadence is something like:Paragraph 1: PlotP2: Compliment Major XiaP3: Compliment Chinese SoldiersP4: Pay tribute to the countryP5: PlotP6: Compliment main character for being a model citizenp7: Insult a villain for being greedyEnd of chapter, rinse and repeat. I might be exaggerating a little, but it feels like the plot is really dragged out. This type of filler is enough to brainwash me into thinking Xia Jinyuan is an actual character with depth. I do NOT mind this so much in small doses, but it's gotten to the point where I want to just read a summary of the plot instead of the actual story. Like another reviewer, I slightly wonder if this novel is propaganda for the state. I suppose it's lucky that the novels lack of realism makes it more likely that the author is just really pro-China and pro-Hot Guy.I do think that the main characters are very suited to each other. However, I really want to see the MC punch Mr. Xia in the face even if it's just once. He's a little too full of himself. XDThe story itself isn't bad. Maybe some of the shortcomings could be compensated for if the translator bundled 2-4 chapters together for releases. It's still worth a read regardless of you like hardworking badass characters who get to faceslap villains like it's a xianxia, but in a modern setting. An adaption of this as a comic or drama that cuts out a lot of the BS to fix the pacing would have a lot of potential.
