Incredibly, amazingly nationalistic. Not surprising for a story centered on the military and training to be a soldier, but still. Once you get past the 'praise China' angle, it's a perfectly acceptable and even good story. Both protagonists are obviously set up to be the best in the world with a slew of skills, but it's not necessarily a deal breaker. Bonus points for a ML who understands the concept of waiting for the MC to come of age and not creep on them in the meantime even if he has some uncomfortably s*xual thoughts.
