He is not dead but he choose to fake his death in order for Tao'er and Gen. Han to have a happy ending. Kinda sad for that since Ning Xi and Tao'er like each other. They're like star crossed lovers.
In the last chapter, Han and Tao'er went to a Lantern Festival and answer some riddles or poem rhyming. Han answered the question and give Tao'er the prize he won, but Tao'er is still sad since both of them (Han) , believes that Ning Xi is dead. Han promises to Tao'er that he will love her more than Ning Xi.
Then, another poem was read, later someone answers it at the same time Tao'er answers the poem. Both she and Han look at who that person since he sounds familiar, then they found Ning Xi smiling at them.
Touching ending but I do hope there's another extra in which that Bao'er or her real mother got karma from what her mother did to Tao'er.
Like deym.. Tao'er is the real Miss Chen!!! Her elder brother deflowered her and even her biological father effs her. Poor girl. Thankfully, Tao'er got her happy ending.
