3.5 stars up to chapter 24: A straightforward high school omegaverse romance with one sole gimmick to make it "different" that actually doesn't make it all that different from any other story where an omega pretends to be a beta only to be eventually found out by his close friend alpha. The uke is an omega whose pheromones smell spicy as opposed to the norm which is sweet and as such, nobody realizes he's an omega and he's able to pretend to be a beta who just really likes spicy food and always carries spicy condiments around. His childhood friend is of course a super hot alpha who is into him while the uke remains humbly oblivious, and there is a side-character comedy-relief beta friend completing their trifecta (don't worry, it's not a love triangle, mostly seme and sometimes uke go to him for advice at times). The translation is also good.

The spicy pheromones element really doesn't make much of a difference beyond being different for the sake of being different—he could have had pheromones that smelled like anything other than normal, or weak pheromones, or secretly be taking suppressants, or whatever. For all that it's a typical story though and follows all its predictable plot points, it's not bad. If this were a manga, it would have been over in 5 chapters with one cute extra, and just like a manga, after high school comes the second volume: college life! Since this is a novel though, there are far more chapters involved.

The first chapter was originally a short story and I think it actually worked better and was more unique as a one-shot that left you wanting more. When the story serialized and it did give more, it became more generic. Like, I'd give the one-shot 4 stars while the full story kind of got meh-ed down to 3, but I gave it an extra half-star because it's not as toxic as other omegaverse stories—the bar is low and the seme rises above it but only as far as the genre goes. Otherwise his possessive nature is typical for BL.

There first-person narration is mostly from the uke's POV with occasional chapters from the seme's, and frequent side-chapters from the side-character friend's POV. As predictable as it is, it's not a bad read even if it's not a great one. I'd say it's okay-good and worth reading if you want some lighter omegaverse that's on the cuter (if somewhat generic) side, is non-toxic, and doesn't have r*pe-y elements beyond the clichés of the omega being assaulted only to be saved by the seme before anything really awful happens. It's good enough for me to occasionally check now and then for updates, but not enthralling enough for me to be checking frequently in eager anticipation.
