I am dropping it despite a number of good elements I enjoyed. Unfortunately, my annoyance with the author has outweighed my patience.

My overall impression is that the novel is bland and the author doesnt even like the premise of their own story.

    • It reaches for the strong-female-lead trope, but doesnt go far enough. Her setup is underused (firefighter) and things she actually does are random and easily negated once the ML shows up.
    • It reaches for the dumb-sweet-husband trope, but doesnt go far enough. He comes off as unreliable tr*sh, not cute. Personality of a brick thrown through your window.
    • It reaches for the survival genre, but TIMESKIPS the whole thing.
    • It reaches for strong single MC raises seven kids, but knocks that down to three without even telling us the other four's names. Why even mention seven at all if you wont commit and only wanted three??
    • It reaches for the hateful villian gets their comeuppance trope, but we met that villian like... once... and their brutal death was not earned in the hearts of the readers. It was brutal, graphic, and stunk of purity-culture bs.
Nothing comits to the narrative. Everything falls short.

Whats worse is the author clearly has some intense ideology about the correct role of men and women that just they just slap EVERYWHERE.

some examples:

Spoiler
    • The firefighter MC is still not comparable to a man in "manly tasks" like woodcutting and must eventually submit to her husband (a "flower in a storm"). According to the author, strong woman means you say no a few times first before accepting it.
    • Ex-dead husband shows up and casually becomes head of house and is immediately accepted by the kids because a family HAS to have a mother AND a father to be happy. Father is NESSISARY for proper child psychology (Desipte that character bringing NOTHING but hardship to the family by forcing his bad ideas and drama on them)
    • Even if a man is beautiful he "could NEVER be mistaken for a woman" and "no man would DARE harass him" (... because harassment is for women).
    • a woman who is mean and (unconfirmed) promiscuous deserves to be brutally gang r*ped to death and the smile on her de*d face is because of too much ple*sure??? While she was being violently assaulted to the point her body was ripped apart?? What the actual f*ck??? And lets talk about the MC's casual oh noooo so sad no one deserves that... but I totally put something in the r*pists food that would have provoked this to be worse... Its a rat poison that makes rats ej*culate to de*th... I use it regularly to kill rats where my children live...
[collapse]

its not so much the characters acting is a weird sexist way, its the author. 100% the author is a problem. They've thrown a "strong independant woman" into a (mid) domestic life novel with a (mid) ML. Survival in acient times, the kids, and the MCs independence are accessories to a plot I havent found yet.
